“Maybe I should invite people to my home and turn my apartment into a makeshift café…”

The Shui Project was born from this simple idea. Kenji Yee, a pro in-line skater, philosophy grad and chef, founded The Shui Project driven by a desire to explore food outside the confines of the restaurant industry. What started as an invitation to friends to enjoy a homemade meal in Kenji’s living room has grown into something powerful and fluid – like water.

Since its founding in 2019, the Shui Project has hosted dozens of family meals and donation-based community pop-ups featuring carefully crafted menus that reflect Kenji’s mixed Chinese and Japanese heritage. We have since outgrown Kenji’s living room, welcomed on a talented team of chefs and creatives, and filled hundreds of happy bellies.

The Shui Project strives to embody the fluidity and adaptability of water to best meet community needs. In 2020, we provided custom takeout meals to essential frontline workers with our Hand Out pop-ups, and when George Floyd was murdered, our Konbini pop-ups fed protesters and those offering supplies and help.

Today, we continue to host pop-ups and collaborate with local artist, organizations and healers. We are now also excited to offer private catering services for a one of a kind culinary experience.

We continue to grow through the process of Shui becoming itself. Thank you for being a part of our evolution <3

“There are a lot of roles in the revolution. I decided that my role was to be in the back of the house cooking for everybody.”
